Rose-gold metallic finish

In the video sculptor David Begbie explains wiremesh sculpture ‘ASU‘, an androgynous body figure and why he uses this special rose-gold colour finish. Many thanks for the music ‘Washing Away‘ by Jan Pulsford!
‘ASU‘ 2018 dimensions: 54 x 18 x 12.5 cm.

David says:

"This is new colour - it's actually called Rose-Gold. It's beautiful, it's quite mysterious, it suits the material which in itself is very mysterious, particularly when we have shadows and highlights.
Because it is a lighter colour it reflects and looks more solid where the black colour for my sculpture is transparent but one of the things I like about this colour is that it is monochrome, it's true to the material as it is a metallic colour – so it's still metal - it is not hiding or disguising the fact that my sculpture is made from metal but also I think what I really like the most about this particular colour is that it looks like skin, it has a sort of flesh tone and makes the artwork quite sensual and talks about the skin, which is what the material really is actually. It is a skin, it has no real solid substance so like skin it shows what is underneath the surface and it shows the beauty of the surface and the shapes. It is a description, skin is a description of the space we occupy.

The distinction I make between art and design is that a design object is utilitarian and designed to be used whereas an art object is ‘useless’ other than being a work of art - as Pablo Picasso once said “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.
